All western countries today have public schools. In the United States, prior to the 1950s, the education offered to student was overseen by the individual states. This, however, all slowly changed until it reached the state we find it in today. The education of all students receiving primary and secondary education are under the complete control and authority of the Department of Education, an agency of the federal government. Not only is the student curriculum mandated, but so are the SEND Teaching Jobs qualifications for teachers. This change all started after the founding of this country as a way to ensure the education of the children. The other reason for a state supported system was to help equip the students to be productive state citizens. They ensured that students were introduced to basic skills that would allow them to work and earn money and advance the economy. The basic skills taught in these state institutions were not at all consistent and in fact varied, sometimes widely, from state to state. The subject matter, however, taught in all institution generally revolved around these courses: English, literature, the Bible, mathematics, history, and geography. This however all began to change starting in the 18th century because of Horace Mann. Mann, who grew up in Massachusetts, saw the education system in the United States as the great social equalizer and made it his life's work to bolster and consolidate the system into a homogenous and uniform platform to improve the lives of every child in America. In addition to this consolidation, he also lobbied for teacher pay raises and for a standardized education system for the primary and secondary teachers in the United States. Today we have a public schools system that is administered not only on the federal level but also on the state level by each individual states education agencies and at the local level by local agencies. Each state has a set number of education districts overseen by a state superintendent. All state run education is funded today by special taxes raised from homeowners who pay a state tax. Those tax rates are based on the market price of each private home in that state. Since the local boards of all state systems are paid for by local taxes, each citizen of the individual county can run for public office and get elected to their board. They do this to have a say in not only textbook purchases but also course and curriculum changes. Many positive and negative things have been said recently about the state of America's education system. As a result many local citizens have been extremely interested in local board elections to try and help to increase the standards for students. The apparent dumbing down SEND Teaching Jobs of America over the years has dismayed many people, especially from the older generation. This was recently brought into focus by a recent donation to the Bullitt County Kentucky History Museum. It was an 8th grade test for students in Bullitt County. The test, which covered subject matters taught in Bullitt County Kentucky in 1912, was apparently not that hard for the student of those days. But it was discovered that most college students and even recent college graduates were incapable of answering most of the questions. You can take a look at this test by Googling it. For many advocates of reform, this is proof the public schools in America need help.

If you are one of the lucky persons who own a house in the beautiful Essex County in the south of England, then you probably know how beautiful and well maintained the homes in this area are. More than 14,000 gorgeous buildings are listed in this county and they are all a sight for sore eyes. Furthermore, you have probably seen your neighbors attending to their houses or yards and making them look brand new and clean all the time. However, there are some issues which are better left on the shoulders of people who are experienced and trained in cleaning homes. It is nothing to be ashamed of if you resort to professionals every now and then. There is no reason not to call in experts, affordable gutter cleaning especially if the task at hand is a treacherous and potentially dangerous one. Have you ever wondered about those persons you see on top of the houses? Surely, they cannot all be residents of that particular home, but rather some specialized gutter cleaners doing their job every single day and helping all of the gorgeous and old Essex homes return to their glory days. Gutter cleaning in Essex has never been optional, but many homeowners used to take care of this messy and unpleasant task on their own in the past. However, this is not always advisable as it can be extremely dangerous at times and provide to be a fairly extenuating chore to say the least. Therefore, here are some of the main reasons that push people towards hiring professionals in the field of cleaning. On the one hand, the experts can do it better and faster, because this is their job. They have the equipment needed, the ladders, the substances, the special gear and all of the needed accessories to finish the gutter cleansing in no time. On the other hand, their approach is always a safe and experienced one. With so many similar jobs done in the past, you can be sure that the dedicated team members you hire from specialized firms are always prepared to handle any Essex building, no matter how old or new it might be. Remember that the county of Essex is one of the oldest in Britain and most of the homes here are especially tall, making the process of reaching the gutters a complicated and treacherous one. Do not attempt to clean them on your own, especially if you just purchased the house or do not know how sturdy or reliable the gutter system really is. Another reason to leave the specialists to handle this is the fact that the gutter cleaning services in Essex have become so affordable that few men or women really wish to do this untidy chore on their own. Why not relax and take a visit to the nearby attractions and greatly preserved pieces of English history, such as the Hedingham Castle, instead of spending the entire weekend to remove all of the leaves and dirt from the top of your house? You can simply call in the professionals and affordable gutter cleaning have the job done in no time, while you have enough spare time left to go to the Upminster Windmill or the Epping Ongar Railway. The options that beautiful and rural Essex has to offer are simply unbelievable, so long as you know how to make your life easier with professional gutter cleansing services.

Has anyone else noticed the rise in healthcare expenses? Not only are the costs of medical care and prescriptions going up, but premiums are on the rise as well. More employers are shifting a higher portion of the costs of healthcare to the employees, including higher deductibles and co-pays in many instances. And this issue is only enhanced by the decrease in monies provided for state and federal run healthcare plans, such as Medi-Cal in California or Medicaid programs. Those who may have previously benefited from these plans due to being in a lower income bracket are finding themselves Heathcare Assistant Recruitment having to fork out money for traditional healthcare plans. For those who are in these lower income brackets who barely fall outside of the required income guidelines, it is becoming increasingly difficult to live on remaining dollars after paying for healthcare alone. For the purposes of the Medi-Cal program specifically, there are several requirements to qualify for the program. The qualifications are really based upon the qualifications for other programs that are state and federally run. If an individual qualifies for cash aid or food stamps, for example, they will likely qualify for Medi-Cal. However, if someone owns a certain amount of property, such as multiple cars or home that is over the allowable limit for the family size then the family would not qualify for health coverage assistance. The general guideline is for property limits starts at $2,000 for the first person and increases with each family member. In addition, the family's income plays a large factor in determining eligibility for the Medi-Cal program. As an example, a family of four can make a maximum of $4,167/month to receive health insurance benefits. Add an additional $708 for each additional family member to find the maximum amount of allowable income for larger families. Other factors include things such as: if a family member has a serious illness or disability, if the woman is pregnant, if there are children in the family, or if a family member needs specific health care, such as nursing home care, cancer treatment, or dialysis, to name a few. Please don't get me wrong. I believe that abuse of the Welfare program (i.e. cash aid, food stamps, medical assistance, homeless assistance, etc.) is absolutely wrong. If someone is receiving assistance and not working because they choose not to work (not because they physically can't work), or if they are receiving assistance but are using the money to purchase drugs or are involved in other illegal activity, then I absolutely believe they should not be able to receive assistance. However, if they are a single-parent household, has a medical emergency, or just can't make ends meet while working a full-time job, then they Heathcare Assistant Recruitment should have the opportunity to receive assistance. That is what it is truly meant for. So, if you don't qualify for Medi-Cal benefits because you are above their income limits, or you don't have children, or you don't have a specific illness or disability, then you'll likely find yourself paying for healthcare either through your employer or through a stand-alone private health insurance plan. I have had all types of health insurance plans over the years, and I have seen the rise in healthcare costs over the years.

When our group arrived at Baanchang Elephant Conservation Camp or interchangeably called Baanchang Elephant Park, our guide whom we later realized was also our trainer, introduced himself as Woody. My mind began to visualize him as a classic cartoon character called Woody Woodpecker. Woody was slim, small built with a Jon Bon Jovi hairdo and had a slightly high-pitched 西瓜卡通 nasal voice. I quickly shook off the thought as I did not want to be distracted from learning about the elephants because that was my purpose of being there. After Woody had gone through the formalities of welcoming us and letting us introduce ourselves to the group, he asked us to change our clothing to what he was going to hand to each one of us. He carried a stack of folded clothes and started to visually size us up and handed a set of denim blue top and pants to each of us as he walked down the line we spontaneously formed. We were eagerly waiting to start the day with the elephants and to be mahouts. He told us the suit was designed according to the traditional mahout attire but I noticed there were some modern alterations like gartered waist pants instead of loose pants that needs to be tied up like a sarong which I believe would likely fall off along the way with novices like us. By the way, mahout stands for keeper or driver of an elephant. We were provided with lockers to keep our belongings and were advised to bring with us our camera and insect repellant. It was important to be hands free without having anything heavy or bulky with us. There were two pockets on our blouse so we could keep our digital camera and insect repellant in them. I decided to keep my bulkier DSLR camera in the locker and relied on my travel partner's digital camera for the photography on this tour. We used a zip-lock bag to waterproof the camera in case of wet weather or any water activity. The locker key had a mini carabiner so we could clip it securely on our blouse button. After we had put on our mahout attire, we spent some time admiring, posing and taking photos for each other with the mahout attire despite the fact that we looked rather ridiculous. We looked like 18th century dock laborers with our loosely fitted short sleeve top that had mandarin buttons down the middle and a three-quarter length baggy pants that had room enough at the crotch to fit a whole watermelon! We were also provided a straw hat that was fashioned like a safari hunter hat. Nevertheless, the day looked bright and sunny so we put on our sun block and assembled at the patio where the baskets of bananas were. Later, we learned that each elephant at this camp were assigned to 3 mahouts to be cared for. The reason for this was that the elephant remembers his caregiver very well and gets very attached to him. If only one mahout was assigned and he had to leave for some days, the elephant may miss him and choose not to eat or cooperate with the other mahouts. Some of them would even fall ill from missing their personal mahout. So to keep them from having to go through such emotional 西瓜卡通 attachments, they rotate the mahouts amongst the elephants so that they will be familiar with at least 3 of them. These mahouts would then be able to take leave or go back to their hometown as and when possible. The mahouts originate from Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) and all the mahouts in this camp were from Myanmar. Historically, the elephants came from Burma and were cared for by the mahouts in that region and that explains why the mahouts had come from Myanmar where they still train their people to become mahouts and have been a tradition passed down from generation to generation.

Whether you are dressing up for a party or a social gathering, you can always color your nails with a nail polish. Since a long time, there's has always been a difference between gel polish and regular nail polish. While both forms help you give a presentable look to your nails, the polish differs in its composition and the way it is used. Composition Known as varnish, regular nail polish is nothing but a colored liquid which is a little bit viscous. As far as the composition is concerned, these are made up of nitrocellulose nail polish dissolved in solvents like ethyl acetate or butyl acetate. Additionally, the polish includes silver halides, solvents, resins, plasticizers and coloring pigments. On the other hand, gel nail polish is composed of a base gel and is highly viscous in nature. It's a semisolid colloidal suspension in which the solid is mixed in the liquid. Once a coat is applied with a brush, the gel is dried or cured under a UV lamp. Purpose If you simply need to beautify your nails the way you desire, then it's worth investing in a regular nail polish. But, on the contrary, gel polish not only adds color but also shine and glow to your nails. Moreover, you can always think differently in case you prefer adorning fingers with nail-art. As you visit the marketplace, a gel polish kit is quite expensive when compared to a regular nail polish. Usage With a regular nail polish, it's not necessary to apply coats one after the other. The varnish dries up immediately once it's exposed to air or when the fingernails are kept under a fan. But, when you try a gel nail polish, you first have to apply a coat and then dry it under ultra-violet light. After some time, once the polish sets in, you need to apply another coat and repeat the drying process. This needs to be done to maintain the consistency and protect the nails from dust particles. While nail varnish can take 20 minutes to dry up, the drying time for a gel-based polish is as much as one minute. Removal In comparison to regular nail varnish, you may need to put in more efforts to remove gel nail polish. Once you have soaked your nails for 15 minutes inside a bowl full of acetone, you need to wrap the nails with an aluminum foil. Afterwards, you then have to lift the foil gently and check whether the polish has been removed. At the end, you need to rub your nails with the help nail polish of a lint-free nail pad. You would also have to re-hydrate cuticles and nails by applying a few drops of apricot cuticle oil. Benefits Regular nail lacquer actually prevents flaking and cracking of nails. This is not the case with a gel polish because the beauty care product protects nails from damages due to heavy lifting. Once the gel polish stays for a period of 2 or 3 weeks, the nails start growing naturally. Even if they get chipped off, the nail would not be prone to damages because the extreme end gets affected. Eventually, this aspect enhances the look of the nail bed as the polish offers complete protection. With nails protruding from the edge, you can always think about a different color and amaze everyone at a social event.

The notable recent increase in Bitcoin prices has rekindled the imagination of many investors, but Blockchain technology is not merely about the money. In this article, we will take a look at how significant an impact this revolutionary technology will have on classic web hosting services. The concept of cryptocurrency is not rocket science. In fact, this medium of exchange is no more complicated than traditional currency. However, it nonetheless needs bitcoin revolution uk a secure and trusting environment in which it can operate, and that is provided by Blockchain. What is Blockchain? There are many misunderstandings relating to it, but, for the purposes of this article, we will simply define it as a distributed spreadsheet. We are all familiar with Excel or Open Office spreadsheets, but what makes Blockchain so attractive is the way it is distributed. Just like the files in Torrent, Blockchain is a peer-to-peer network where it is not necessary to ensure trust between parties. Thanks to modern cryptography, the trust is instead maintained on the level of a single record rather than the party hosting it. Okay, so now we understand the basics of the cryptocurrency revolution, but how, we may ask, does it affect web hosting services? Essentially, in its simplest form, this would suggest not only selling your services in your local currency, but also in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. However, this is not the end of the revolution. Bitcoin and other digital currencies need electronic wallets to operate, and there is thus huge potential for traditional web hosting vendors. If you have the trust of your customers and are hosting their sites, then why not host their electronic valets? Each operation in cryptocurrency is a de facto transaction between two electronic valets. Every exchange is maintained through the wallet and you can also provide an interface for your customers to access it. This factor is pivotal in order to fully understand the impact Blockchain can have on your web hosting business. This said, Blockchain is not only about money. The newest versions of its protocols also provide the opportunity to enact any form of contract between the bitcoin revolution uk parties, whether this is a subscription to cable television or indeed any other type of bill. They all need to be stored somewhere, and there is a place for web hosting companies to be involved.

The secret to trading is often thought to be more a function of time frame than a function of skill. In much the same way that university students and alumni promote and defend their alma mater, come hell or high water, so do proponents of the different schools of trading. With almost fanatical zeal, traders will tout the benefits of being a day, position, or swing trader. One trader will say going home flat is the only way to trade; another trader will say that the trend is your friend. Who's to say either is 100 percent right? As with many things in life, success in trading is not cut and dry. If it were, everyone who attends a trading seminar quantum ai trading or reads a trading book would be able to emulate the success of the speaker or author immediately. Each trader has to find his own path to success, using the information that he acquires along the way as a guide post towards his end goal. George Soros, Warren Buffett, and Richard Dennis are each successful in their own right. George Soros founded the Quantum Fund with the express purpose of speculating. Much of his trading revolved around short-term and opportunistic currency moves, long before he established his non-profit company. Warren Buffett took a different approach. Known as a value investor, Warren Buffett's buy and hold strategy turned many of his shareholders into multi-millionaires. Richard Dennis, on the other hand, used commodity options as a way to trade himself to wealth. All of these men are considered professional traders, yet each has his own way of doing things, his own strategy for protecting himself from loss, and his own variety of success in trading the markets. It's a lot like professional sports. In professional sports there are no two players that are just alike. You can point to two athletes in the same sport, with similar size, strength, speed, training, and ability. While both are professional athletes and can become hall-of-famers, it could be for entirely different reasons. To be successful you must explore the three common types of traders -day, swing, and position traders-and delineate the advantages and disadvantages of each. Then you must look at whether or not being a trader focused solely on time is a realistic option when attempting to mimic a professional trader interacting with the markets. It is important to first spotlight the necessary components found in a successfully designed trade: entry, loss target, and profit target numbers. Second you must look at the daisy chain interaction of the cash, futures, and options markets. This sheds light on why each of one the approaches works or doesn't strategies work. Finally, you have look at the essential trade setups quantum ai trading of trends and counter-trends and explore them in depth. Every type of trader can benefit from analysis of these three ideas and achieve their end goals. The value comes from not attempting to blindly pigeon-hole yourself into a specific type of trader when you lack a realistic understanding of what you are getting in to.

For thousands of years, dogs have been "man's best friend." Dog-loving humans have tried to keep their pets safe in return. As the world becomes more complex, dogs need extra attention now more than ever to stay safe. With a little foresight and action, you can create a "home, safe home" for your precious pooches. Dogs have a keen curiosity. If you look at your home from your dog's perspective, you'll probably find all kinds of interesting things to examine. What most people pet safe silicone don't realize is that dogs first sniff, then mouth items to learn about them. So, be sure to keep the following out of your dog's reach: roach and ant traps electric and phone cords cigarettes in ashtrays open doors and windows rubber bands housecleaning chemicals candles Christmas trees ornaments paperclips Dogs, especially puppies, find plants irresistible as playthings. They love to dig in the dirt of houseplants, and seem to enjoy pulling off branches of shrubs. Because of this, it is important to make sure the plants in and around your home won't pose a health risk to your dog. Keep your pet safely confined to your home. A wandering dog is much more likely to be injured by vehicles or unkind people. In most cities, by law, your dog may only be off your property if she is on a leash controlled by a person. To prevent escapes, make sure the fencing in your yard is high enough and strong enough to keep your dog from roaming. Frequently check for gaps between the fence bottom and the ground; watch for signs your dog is trying to dig out under the fence. Teach all the members of your family to carefully close doors and latch gates. Every dog should wear a collar with an identification tag. Most municipalities require that all dogs wear a collar and tag. To ensure your dog finds her way home if she ever loses her collar, consider having your dog micro-chipped. Most animal shelters automatically scan lost pets to read the owner contact information. However, if your dog is found by an average pet safe silicone citizen an identification tag will speed up your reunion. Fireworks and loud bangs can frighten pets, and that fear can cause your dog to panic and try to escape from your yard or house. Please keep your pet indoors on Halloween or the Fourth of July in a quiet isolated room, or the basement where there are no windows, to help her feel safe and secure. Turn on a fan, a radio or television to muffle the sound of fireworks. They'll provide familiar sounds and will help soothe her if she must be alone on these noisy holidays.

Hair is such an emotive subject and with human nature being human nature, what we want we can't have and what we have we don't want! Curly hair and we want straight, straight hair and we want curly, brunette and we want blonde, blonde and we want red. Likewise upper lip hair on a female, so valued as a sign of exquisite beauty in certain parts of the world, is vilified by our Western society. Unwanted hair is a common problem affecting most women to varying degrees throughout their lives and prompting the use of various temporary methods of Hair Removal reduction or hair management systems. It causes great distress, and it is often accompanied by feelings of poor self esteem, a sense of isolation and low self worth. Since the times when bearded ladies in Victorian travelling fairs were displayed for entertainment and ridicule, Western society has nurtured a stigma about excess hair. Many women are pressured into tremendous lengths to remove any trace of hair from any and every part of their body as they feel it to be unattractive and unappealing. However it is not only women that are now affected... increasingly the male gender is subject to pressure from the 'fashion' and celebrity world and unwanted hair can be just as vilified by the male population nowadays as the female. Different Methods of Hair Removal Superfluous hair growth can be caused by many factors, such as, hormone imbalance, (during puberty, pregnancy and menopause), genetics and ethnicity, hereditary, medication or topical stimulation e.g. waxing or tweezing. Therefore, electrolysis - the only permanent method of hair removal, is a treatment that is in great demand by female and transsexual clients and more recently, due to society's attitudes, the number of male clients is increasing. To meet this need there as always been many hair removal measures some of which go back centuries in history. Hair removal has been around since caveman times but interestingly the parts of the body we are removing hair from have differed over the ages. Removing hair from the head and face of men was originally not for vanity purposes but for survival. There is evidence that cavemen did this but also the ancient Egyptians and it was undertaken, we imagine, for protection, as scraping off the beard and hair on the head would take away the advantage of an adversary having anything to grab onto as well as having less mites! In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Middle Eastern countries, removing body hair was important. In fact these women removed most of their body hair, except for eyebrows. Egyptian women removed their head hair and pubic hair was considered uncivilized by both sexes! It was also considered uncivilized for men to have hair on their face. Facial hair was the mark of a slave or servant, or of a person of lower class. The ancient Egyptians used a form of razors made of flint or bronze as the razor was not invented till the 1760's by French barber, Jean Jacques Perret. They also used a method of temporary hair removal called sugaring. A sticky paste (bees wax was sometimes used) would be applied to the skin, a strip of cloth was pressed onto the wax and yanked off - the equivalent of waxing today. Wealthy women of the Roman Empire would remove their body hair with pumice stones, razors, tweezing and pastes. There was also another technique used called threading which is recently seeing a resurgence in popularity. Thin string or yarn would be placed through the fingers of both hands, and quickly stroked over the area. This repetitive process captured the hair and effectively tweezed, ripped or pulled the unwanted hair out. During the Elizabethan times the practice of hair removal, (not of leg, armpit or pubic hair), of their eyebrows and the hair from their foreheads in order Hair Removal to give the appearance of a longer brow and forehead was fashionable. It is startling to note the obvious influence 'fashion' has played in hair removal from the very beginning. Waxing, sugaring, depilatory creams, bleaching, shaving, sugaring, plucking, threading and even battery-powered tweezers multiple-plucking systems, are all temporary methods that many people try today. In fact new hair removal devices seem to appear like buses - every 20 minutes or so! However, technology has moved on and with it, it appears that there are some restricted and doubtful methods of hair removal. X-ray and photodynamic methods are in a restricted category because the former has been banned in some countries like the USA and the latter are only in experimental stages. Electric tweezers, transdermal electrolysis, and microwaves are some of the doubtful methods in that there is no established data on their effectiveness.

During these winter months is there a better way to spend an evening in than curling up in front of an open fire and just letting time stand still? Maybe you have been out for the day and the cold winds have snapped at your feet leaving them numb and chilled. Toasting them in front of an open fire is surely a delight we would all walk miles to experience. There is something about the comfort and ambience that an open fire creates and draws us all in like bears to honey. So if you are fortunate heat logs for sale enough to have an open or log fire in your living room at home, the cold winter months are a time that you actually look forward to. Now the thing is with the open fire that it is not completely easy street. The fire needs fuel to burn and even though logs are not expensive to buy, they do however cost. And then there is the issue of transporting the logs back to your home as well. Most local hardware stores will sell you quantities of wooden logs for the fire and, in some cases, they may well even deliver them for you. But the point here is that you still need to go out of your way to organise the fuel for your fire. But if there was another option of fuelling your fire that was pretty much cost free, required no deliveries or collections and even helped the environment would you consider that option? Be folly not too I hear you say. Well there is another way to fuel your fire and that is with a briquette maker. The briquette maker is a small tool in which you can place old newspaper, cardboard and junk mail and compress them in to briquettes which can be used as a substitute for wooden logs on your fire. And with the average home producing approximately 500 kg of waste paper every year, there is no shortage of paper to make your briquettes. To make your own briquettes is a very simple process. All you need do is soak the old paper in water and then place it in the briquette maker. When you have enough paper, just compress it and the end result ill be a briquette. Dry these briquettes by placing them somewhere heat logs for sale warm and then once dried out, these briquettes will give you about 2 hours burning time for each paper log. They are smokeless, odourless and leave only minute deposits of ash. A pretty perfect burning fuel in my opinion that is extremely cheap to produce as well as helping save the environment.

You may think that the only hassle with humidity is your hair frizzing or living in an uncomfortable climate. However, humidity can cause more problems than ruining a good hair day or making you feel hot and sticky. The excess water vapor in the air can cause health and skin problems. Depending on the size of the room, you may need two or three humidifiers placed in a big space. If you don't want humidifiers around your house or you can afford to spend more money on a home unit, you can purchase whole house humidifiers that can be put directly onto your heating system. If your skin is very dry, I would recommend using an organic eczema oil to moisturize and soothe the cracked skin.

It was a sunny Saturday morning. I trailed my friends around a lovely suburban garden center on a sunny Saturday morning. More enthusiastic gardeners than I, they examined odd varieties of ferns and rusty garden sculptures while I daydreamed. Old college friends, we gather every once in a while to talk for hours and tour around spots of interest while our husbands go off to Operational Resilience regress into their long-ago frat boy selves, to everyone's entertainment, especially theirs. My cell phone rang and my heart sank when I saw it was a counselor who worked with me in my practice. Sigh. This must be a client crisis bad enough that she had to notify me. "Maraline," I said, "What's up?" "Where are you?" she asked. "Um, Elburn, or St. Charles, not sure. For the weekend," I said. "You don't know what happened to the office then," she said. "No." "There was a fire. Last night," she said. "Oh," I said, relieved that we weren't dealing with a suicidal client or a child abuse report. "No one was in the building. They think it started around 11 o'clock," she told me. "Well, that's good. I'll be back Sunday night. I can deal with it Monday." "You don't understand. It burned down. To the ground. There is no office anymore," she said. Unimaginable. I loved that office. In a shared suite building, our two counseling rooms, small administration space, and a large group room we reserved a couple of nights a week, it provided just what we needed and nothing more. And we had a private storeroom in the basement where twenty years worth of counseling files were secured. I had downsized into that building and it fit perfectly. I had friends and friendly acquaintances in that building, other counselors and massage therapists, an investment guy, an outplacement consultant, a dentist, an accountant, a couple of lawyers, all held together by the personable front desk secretary who always said yes and never made a face when you asked something of her. "You need to come now. To see if you can salvage anything," she said. Salvage anything? What? Goodbye garden center. Goodbye carefree weekend. "Thanks, Maraline, for calling," I said, "I guess," attempting humor. "I just left there," she said, about to deliver the line I needed to hear to get me into action. "Some of our stuff is strewn in the parking lot. I picked up what I could." she asked. Yikes. Client files in the parking lot? Nooooo. "Okay, I'm on my way." "Can I meet you there?" she offered. "Um, no. I'll call you if I need to." I had no idea what I was saying. I rallied my friends, who also offered to help, and got them to take me back to Operational Resilience pick up my car at the house where we were staying. No, thanks, I'd go myself; I could handle this. Why ruin their much-anticipated day? I arranged to meet them later for dinner at a restaurant in a nearby town. I had accomplished step one of my usual crisis management protocol: Refuse help. In the car I was strangely calm, yet disoriented. Where was the map? Which expressway am I looking for? How could this have happened? That's when I had my first good idea of the day. I called my daughter, recently returned from college for the summer. "Kate, I'm coming to pick you up. My office burned down. " "Whoa, okay," she said. "Get out the crow bars and some bags. And a hammer. I'll be there in 30 minutes. And those file boxes in the basement. And wear crummy clothes." I was starting to function, moving into my second step: Do something, anything, because everything is fixable. I picked up Katy and took my usual 40 minute route to the office. As we rounded the final corner, I saw a pile of debris, unrecognizable as the two-story office building of a certain age, well beyond its peak but still quite serviceable. It had been light brick with tan and brown trim. The pile looked gray, with boards jutting toward the sky, and occasional accent colors - a green filing cabinet, a red table top, a yellow sign. "Whoa," Katy said again, capturing it perfectly. Wisps of smoke arose from the middle of the pile. One fire truck remained, and a firefighter trained water on the smoking debris. We started walking the perimeter, trying to get our bearings. Our office must have been about there in the middle. The top floor had collapsed into the basement, but why couldn't I spot a thing that was ours? Everything seemed displaced, upside down. Several of my co-tenants climbed around the edges, gathering stray bits of their professional lives. Everyone looked as dazed as I felt, and as our eyes met, we shook our heads. "Are you finding anything?" I asked. "Not much," they said. I saw the accountant from across the hall. "I think I saw some of your paperwork over there," she said, pointing toward the back corner of the lot. How did it get all the way over there, thirty feet beyond the outer walls? "Thanks," I said, "Did you find yours?" She must have had years' worth of client financial information in her computer. "I came over as soon as I heard about it last night, and one of the firefighters retrieved my computer for me." Uh oh. I was seriously behind. We chased down the paperwork she had spotted, and spent the next seven hours gathering up any evidence of Healy & Associates that had escaped the inferno. Katy and her crowbar broke into bent file cabinets that had been hauled up from the storage room and dumped at the far corner of the parking lot by heavy machinery. The files that were water-logged we placed in boxes to take to the shredding company. The rest reeked of smoke, and we placed them in bags to go home with me, until we ran out. My in-laws showed up, eager to find out what they could do to help, and we sent them to Dominick's for plastic bags. They returned with so many that we could bag everything we came up with over the next days, and then use the remainder at home for the next five years. When we got too hot, we walked across the street to Arby's to get lemonade and snacks. When we got too tired, we would stop and talk with co-tenants. We repeated this for the next four days, until the equipment came to haul the pile away. With every day, we grew bolder, venturing into the debris further and further, trying to decode the logic of the pile. We walked tightrope style on wobbly boards, searching for our relics. We finally located the epicenter of our operation and found the roll of "20 years of excellence" stickers I had ordered in a fit of self-congratulation, the seal embosser we used on official documents, and the Mickey Mouse mouse pad, also a melted calculator, and the CONFIDENTIAL stamp we put on all records. I even found a section of our plaid couch and cut some fabric from it just because I'd never see it again. We eventually found the computer under two feet of someone else's stuff. Even though the case was bashed in and the components melted, I later took it to an expert to insure that the data was gone. Once I had it, and took the recovered files home to air out on my garage floor, I started to relax. At least no one could wander into the site and invade my clients' privacy. By then, I had begun step three of my crisis process: Compare this mess with how much worse it could have been, and be glad. With the building gone, I embarked on my next step: Trudge ahead. I talked turkey with the counselor who was my mainstay, and she agreed to continue with me despite the upheaval. A dear old friend offered me the use of his counseling space until we could relocate. I dealt with the intricacies of insurance documentation. And I spent hours of my life which I will never get back on the phone with the phone company, hearing, believing, and then no longer believing strings of unkept promises about when our phone number would be functioning again. While I never cried about the fire, Ameritech had me in tears more than once. By the time I went out to shop for new office space, I was getting my spirit back. It was fun to imagine a new look, in a new space, closer to the Interstate, closer to my house, in a newer building with an elevator. I furnished it quickly but with enthusiasm. I picked out some art work, and the building put down new carpet. Within a month, we opened. It looked great.

Success in business and in life comes to those who can sustain energy, creativity and passion in the midst of continual change, stress and competition. Information overload leaves us struggling to sustain that passion and drive and achieve the work/life balance that is essential to our growth and well-being. We are being bombarded with information every day and are PRA Operational Resilience working in different environments that require more accountability and have higher expectations than 10 years ago. Individual and organizational resilience is needed now more than ever. Webster's Dictionary defines resilience as the ability to recover from misfortune or change. Mike Jay, author of CPR for the Soul and Founder of Leadership University defines it as "the integrated power to persist when things don't work out at first; to navigate ambiguity and uncertainty; to transcend common problems and barriers and to anticipate the future in a sustainable way." According to Albert Bandura, individuals are instilled with certain capabilities that define what it is like to be human. Among those capabilities are: the ability to learn from our mistakes, plan for the future, reflect on ourselves and situations and manage our emotions. These capabilities provide us with the tools to control our own future and remain resilient in changing times. Developing these capabilities is the key to increasing our resilience. They are what make us human. We are the only species that is capable of planning, reflecting and managing our emotions. So the elements that make us unique are the same elements that can make us resilient in challenging times. Resilience matters more than training, education and experience and will ultimately determine who succeeds and who fails. There are many elements of resilience, but these are the ones I find most important: 1. Accept things as they are not as you hope or wish they would be. It is easy to slip into denial as a way of coping with challenging times, but the only real way to prepare ourselves and our organizations for these challenges is to face reality. It is when we deny things that we perpetuate the hardship and stop any growth and renewal from occurring. With each day and month the cost of denial goes up. To be truly resilient, an individual and an organization must avoid wishful thinking and stop living in the past. They must be willing to face reality head on. Resilience means having the capacity to change before change becomes necessary. This is planning for our futures rather than being victims of our reality. 2. Know what's important and navigate around that. When there is a lack of clarity around what is most important, our actions and behaviors are undirected and resilience is stalled. Strong values serve as maps to guide our behaviors and actions. At times of crisis and hardships it is this clarity that allows us to navigate through the fog. If we are lost with no map and no signs to guide us, it makes the recovery much longer. Successful individuals and organizations have strong values that direct their behavior at times of crisis. 3. Know Thy Self. Self Knowledge is critical for resilience. If we are clear about our strengths and weaknesses, we are better able to leverage our strengths and manage our weaknesses. When we spend much of our time operating out of our weaknesses, more effort is expended and results are dispersed. Directing our actions around our strengths allows us to be more efficient PRA Operational Resilience and effective in freeing up creative energy. Problems and challenges will not be transcended if we become victims of our blind spots and minimize our talents and creativity 4. Accept and make meaning out of what life hands us. The core of resilience is the ability to bounce back from hardships. If we complain and whine about the challenges that are upon us, we are unable to adequately reflect and learn from the difficulties. Resilient people and organizations are able to see a potential opportunity hidden beneath the adversity. They build bridges with reflections from their past to the ingenuity of today and finally to a fuller future The resilient people of today and tomorrow are the ones who can face reality head on, knowing what's important in the moment, leveraging their strengths and making meaning out of hardships. We create the future through our response to the challenges of today.
